Why narratives matter

How can it be that there are systems in place that only work for the privileged few? How come that we do not unite and mobilize by billions to change this? We believe that parts of the answers can be found in the power of narratives. We are surrounded by messages that tell us there is nothing wrong with the system – but with ourselves. Stories are told that stress or invent differences to obscure our shared humanity.

We are embarking on a collective journey to better understand the power of narratives. Together, we seek to pool ideas and learn from experiences how narratives can be used differently – to expose the cracks into our unfair systems, to bridge and unite, and to create alternatives that work for everyone.

About the initiative

The Narrative Space is a platform to share insights, resources, and inspiring examples of how the power of narratives can be harnessed to advance social justice. Born from a shared commitment to learn with and from our partners and allies, this space is an open invitation to collaborate, exchange knowledge and empower each other.

The Narrative Space is based on the belief that there is no ‘one’ way to do narrative work. Instead, it aims to highlight the diversity of perspectives and approaches of our partners and allies engaged in narrative change efforts. Some of these partners are proclaimed narrative experts. Others employ narrative approaches in their social activism, without necessarily naming it as such. Learning from both types of actors allows us to tap into the rich registry of narrative approaches and experiences that are out there to be shared, used, and adapted.

Whether you’re a campaigner, activist, movement builder, researcher, or storyteller, we invite you to contribute your voice and help shape this evolving space.
