The Narrative Space is a platform for sharing insights, resources, and inspiring examples of how the power of narratives can be harnessed to advance social justice. It was initiated by Oxfam’s Civic Space Knowledge Hub, sparked by a shared commitment to learn with and from partners and allies around the world.
This space is an open invitation – to collaborate, exchange knowledge and inspire each other.
A Diversity of Approaches
We believe that there is no single way to do narrative work. The Narrative Space aims to highlight the diversity of perspectives and approaches of those engaged in narrative change efforts. Some of the people featured in this space are recognized narrative experts. Others integrate narrative approaches in their activism, without necessarily naming it as such.
Learning from both types of actors allows us to tap into the rich registry of narrative approaches and experiences that are out there to be shared, used, and adapted.
Why This Space Was Created
This initiative began in response to growing concerns from Oxfam teams and partners about the rise of harmful narratives targeting civil society, particularly in contexts where civic space is restricted or closing.
Through ongoing dialogue and exploration, it became clear that these narratives are not just attacks on civil society—they are part of a broader effort to undermine core values like equality, solidarity, inclusiveness, and accountability, and to discredit those who defend them.
In seeking effective responses, we’ve been inspired by the courageous, creative, and strategic actions of narrative practitioners across the global. Their work has informed this space, which aims to help others navigate the wealth of knowledge and experience available, and to share tools, insights, and resources for narrative change.
